Our work is funded by the amazing Wellcome Trust.

    DNA motors

We study the molecular machines that organise genomes or protect them from infectious agents.

How do SMC motors work? How do they use the power of ATP hydrolysis to shape our genomes?

    Phage attack

We study bacteriophage biology to help address the antimicrobial resistance crisis.

How do phages and infectious plasmids manipulate host genomes, and how do bacteria fight back? Can we engineer bacteriophages to help us?

    The approaches

We reconstitute cellular processes from purified components to gain control over the systems we study.

We combine cryo-EM imaging with biochemical assays to uncover molecular mechanisms, and use genetic screens and synthetic biology to test hypotheses and discover new relationships.
